‘Their Name Liveth for Evermore’.
Every Remembrance Sunday the names of the 28 men from the rural villages of Cerne Abbas, Up Cerne, Minterne and Godmanstone in the County of Dorset, whose names are honoured on their respective war memorials, are read out at the Service in St Mary’s Church, Cerne Abbas. They include casualties from the First and Second World Wars and the Falklands conflict.
The Society has researched the lives and deaths of each of these men and what has been discovered about them is summarised here in a downloadable pdf document.
The Society is pleased to record that this research identified two men who were casualties of the First World War and who had missed commemoration by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. They will now be honoured with a CWGC headstone at their local graves.
